Disconnectors and grounding switches are two key devices with different functions in the power system. The main differences are as follows:
1. Main functions
Disconnector/Isolating Switch
Function: Used to cut off or connect the circuit when there is no load current in the circuit, provide an obvious disconnection point, ensure that the electrical equipment is isolated from the power supply, and facilitate inspection or maintenance.
Features:
Does not have arc extinguishing ability and cannot be operated with load (need to disconnect the circuit breaker first).
Only used to isolate the power supply and ensure a safe distance.

Grounding switch
Function: Ground the isolated line or equipment to release residual charge and prevent electric shock or induced electric shock in case of misoperation.
Features:
Usually linked with the disconnector, closed and grounded after isolation.
Can pass fault current (such as short-circuit current) for a short time, but generally cannot interrupt the current.

2. Use scenarios
Isolating switch:
Isolate power supply (such as transformer, busbar, etc.) during maintenance.
Switch circuit operation mode (such as double busbar system).
Grounding switch:
Ground the isolated equipment before maintenance to ensure personnel safety.
Prevent the power outage line from generating dangerous voltage due to induced voltage or lightning.
3. Structure and operation
Isolating switch:
The contacts are exposed and visible, and a clear air gap is formed when disconnected.
Operation sequence: first disconnect the circuit breaker, then operate the isolating switch.
Grounding switch:
Simple structure, usually directly connected to the equipment housing or ground grid.
Operation sequence: must be closed after the isolating switch is disconnected.
4. Special types
Combination electrical appliances:
Modern high-voltage switchgear (such as GIS) often integrates isolating switches and grounding switches into one unit, and uses mechanical interlocking to prevent misoperation (such as the "isolating-grounding" states are mutually exclusive).
Summary of key differences
| Comparison item | Isolating switch | Grounding switch |
|---|---|---|
| Core functions | Isolate power supply | Safety grounding |
| Can it be operated with load | Strictly prohibited | Strictly prohibited (power off first) |
| Arc extinguishing capability | No | No |
| Operation sequence | Operation after circuit breaker is disconnected | Operation after disconnecting the isolating switch |
