How to solve the gas leakage problem of vacuum interrupter?

A leak in a vacuum interrupter means its core "vacuum" environment is destroyed, directly leading to a sharp decline in insulation and interrupting performance, and even causing serious accidents such as explosions.

Core Principle: Once a leak in a vacuum interrupter is confirmed, the most fundamental and reliable solution is immediate replacement, not repair.

A vacuum interrupter is a sealed, non-removable component. Its internal vacuum level must be maintained at a high level (typically below 10⁻⁴ Pa) throughout its lifecycle, which can reach 20-30 years. Any attempt to "repair" a leak on-site is highly risky and unreliable.

Below, I will elaborate on how to "solve" this problem from four aspects: judgment of leakage, cause analysis, treatment process and preventive measures.

Step 1: Accurately Determine Whether There is a Leak

Before deciding to replace the switch, you must first confirm whether there is a leak. This can be determined using the following comprehensive methods:

Vacuum Level Testing (the most direct and authoritative method)

Offline Testing: Use a dedicated vacuum tester (such as a magnetron discharge tester) for quantitative measurement. This is the most scientific method, accurately measuring the vacuum level inside the interrupter and comparing it to standard requirements.

Online Monitoring: High-end switchgear is equipped with an online vacuum monitoring device that monitors vacuum level changes in real time or periodically, providing early warning.

Power Frequency Withstand Voltage Test (a routine preventive test method)

In the open state, a specified power frequency withstand voltage (e.g., 42kV for 1 minute) is applied across the interrupter. If the vacuum level in the interrupter is severely degraded, internal breakdown will occur, and the test will fail. This is a qualitative test that can detect severe leaks but not minor deterioration.

Visual Inspection and Daily Inspections

Internal Observation: If the shielding cover inside the interrupter changes color (e.g., from a bright metallic color to reddish-brown or dark black), this indicates repeated internal discharges or metal vapor condensation, and the vacuum level is likely substandard.

External Inspection: Inspect the bellows for mechanical damage, indentations, cracks, or severe oxidation. The bellows is a critical component of the dynamic seal and one of the most common leak points.

Operational Signs: During operation or operation, if unusual discharge sounds are heard inside the interrupter, or if interruption failure occurs (e.g., a load is not disconnected when it should), a vacuum problem should be highly suspected.

Step 2: Analyze the possible causes of the leak.

Understanding the cause can help prevent and determine liability.

Manufacturing process defects (congenital causes)

Small cracks or bubbles in the sealing interface (ceramic-to-metal seal, glass-to-metal seal).

Defective exhaust pipe seal (exhaust pipe "tail")

High gas content in the internal material, which is slowly released during operation.

Mechanical damage (acquired causes)

Bellows damage: This is the most common cause. During repeated opening and closing operations, if the transmission mechanism becomes stuck, misaligned, or overtravel is improperly adjusted, the bellows can be overcompressed, stretched, or twisted, resulting in fatigue cracks.

Transportation and installation collisions can cause cracks in the ceramic insulation casing of the arc extinguishing chamber.

External environmental corrosion

External environments with humid, corrosive gases (such as those in chemical plants and coastal areas) can lead to long-term corrosion of the bellows or sealing welds.

Step 3: Clear Process and Solution

The only correct solution: Replace the vacuum interrupter

Immediately shut down and isolate: Once a leak is confirmed or highly suspected, the circuit breaker must be immediately taken out of service and safety isolation measures implemented (tag out, lock out, disconnect control power, etc.).

Contact a professional: Notify a professional electrical maintenance team or the equipment manufacturer for assistance. User intervention is strictly prohibited.

Replacing the interrupter:

Have a professional remove the faulty interrupter from the circuit breaker body.

CAUTION: During removal, be extremely careful to avoid damaging the new interrupter, especially the bellows.

Install a new, inspected and qualified vacuum interrupter of the same model.

Adjustment and Testing:

A crucial step: After installing a new interrupter, professional personnel must strictly follow the manufacturer's specifications to re-adjust mechanical parameters such as contact span, overtravel, contact pressure, and three-phase synchronicity. Improper adjustment is the main cause of damage to the new interrupter bellows!

After adjustment, the following tests must be performed:

Main circuit resistance test: Ensures good contact.

Mechanical property test: Verifies that parameters such as opening and closing speed, time, and overtravel meet acceptable standards.

Power frequency withstand voltage test: Verifies the insulation strength of the new interrupter.

Vacuum test (if available): It is best to use a vacuum tester for final verification of the new interrupter.

Step 4: Preventive Measures

Prevention is better than cure.

Standardize operation and maintenance:

Avoid frequent operation and frequent short-circuit current surges.

Perform preventive tests strictly according to maintenance cycles.

Strengthen patrol inspections:

Regularly inspect the arc extinguishing chamber for any visual abnormalities and listen for any abnormal audible sounds.

For systems with online monitoring, carefully review data trends.

Ensure installation and maintenance quality:

Ensure the mounting foundation is secure and that transmission components are flexible and free of binding.

During maintenance, use specialized tools and instruments, and have experienced technicians adjust mechanical parameters.

Select high-quality products:

Purchase vacuum interrupters and circuit breakers from reputable manufacturers to ensure factory quality.

Summary

The only correct way to resolve vacuum interrupter leaks is: confirm the fault through professional means -> immediately shut down and isolate the system -> have a professional replace the interrupter -> rigorously adjust and test mechanical parameters -> resume operation after acceptance. Any attempt to patch the leak is dangerous and unrealistic.
