What are the structure and function of the plum-blossom-shaped contact, stationary contact, and contact arm?

"Plum blossom contacts," "stationary contacts," and "contact arms" are critical electrical connection components in medium and high-voltage switchgear (such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, and switchgear trolleys). Together, they form the current path and the points of connection and disconnection.

1. Petal-shaped Contact

Definition and Shape: Named for its petal-like shape, it typically consists of multiple independent "petals" (i.e., contact fingers) arranged in a ring, with a hollow center. It is a type of movable contact.

Working Principle: The petals of the petal-shaped contact are elastic. When it is inserted and mated with a stationary contact (usually a cylindrical contact), the petals are spread open and, relying on their own elastic pressure, tightly grip the surface of the stationary contact, forming multiple parallel contact points.

Core Advantages:

Self-cleaning effect: During insertion and removal, the friction between the petals and the surface of the stationary contact scrapes away the oxide layer and dirt, maintaining good electrical contact.

Multi-point contact, good heat dissipation: Multiple contact fingers provide multiple parallel current paths, reducing contact resistance, resulting in high current carrying capacity and good heat dissipation.

Electrodynamic stability: When a short-circuit current passes through, the enormous electrodynamic force causes the petals to grip even tighter, preventing the contacts from separating due to electrical repulsion, resulting in extremely high stability.

Easy installation and maintenance: Usually installed as a modular component.

Applications: Widely used in applications requiring frequent insertion and removal or where extremely high contact reliability is required, most typically as the movable contact end of circuit breaker switchgear.

2. Stationary Contact

Definition: A conductive component that is paired with a moving contact and remains fixed during operation.

Shape: When paired with a tulip contact, the stationary contact is typically a smooth, cylindrical conductive rod (also known as a "contact base" or "stationary contact holder").

Function: Provides a stable connection interface to receive the insertion of the tulip contact. It is usually fixed to the busbar compartment or stationary contact box of the switchgear.

Requirements: The surface needs to be smooth and flat, possessing good conductivity and wear resistance.

3. Contact Arm

Definition: It is the conductive bridge and supporting structure connecting the circuit breaker body (such as the moving end of the vacuum interrupter) to the external tulip contacts.

Structure: It is usually a rigid conductive metal rod (copper or aluminum alloy), with one end connected to the internal moving conductive rod of the circuit breaker, and the other end fitted with the tulip contact assembly.

Functions:

Mechanical Support: Supports the tulip contacts and, driven by the operating mechanism, moves the tulip contacts in a linear motion to insert into or withdraw from the stationary contacts.

Conductive Path: Conducts current from the inside of the circuit breaker to the external tulip contacts, and then to the stationary contacts.

Key Role: The length, rigidity, and movement trajectory of the contact arm determine whether the tulip contacts can accurately and smoothly align with and insert into the stationary contacts, which is crucial for ensuring smooth "racking in and out" operation of the switchgear.

4.The Collaborative Working Relationship of the Three Components (Taking a Medium-Voltage Draw-out Circuit Breaker as an Example)

We can understand this using a simple "arm-hand-socket" analogy:

The contact arm is like the "arm."

The tulip contact is like the "hand" (a flexible, gripping hand) installed at the end of the arm.

The stationary contact is like the "cylindrical socket" on the wall.

Working Process:
When closing the circuit, the circuit breaker's operating mechanism drives the contact arm (arm) forward. The tulip contact (hand) at the end of the arm precisely inserts into the stationary contact (socket) fixed to the cabinet. The petals of the tulip contact elastically grip the stationary contact rod, forming a low-resistance, highly reliable electrical connection.
When opening the circuit or during maintenance, the operating mechanism retracts the contact arm, pulling the tulip contact out of the stationary contact, thus breaking the circuit.

5.Summary and comparison

Components Alternate names/common names Motion Status Main functions Typical installation locations
Plum blossom contact Moving contact, petal contact Movable (moves with the robotic arm) Provides flexible contact and self-cleaning, acting as the direct contact surface. Installed at the end of the contact arm
Stationary contact Stationary contact base, conductive base Fixed (immovable) Provides a stable mating surface for receiving the crown contact. Secured to the busbar compartment or contact box of the switchgear
Contact arm Conductive arm, pull rod Movable (driven by a mechanism) Supports and drives the crown contact, serving as a bridge for electrical conduction and power transmission Connected to the moving end output of the circuit breaker body

In summary: the contact arm acts as both the actuator and support structure, carrying the "intelligent terminal" of the tulip contact head to insert into or withdraw from the fixed stationary contact, thereby completing the connection and isolation of the circuit. This "tulip contact head + cylindrical stationary contact" design is one of the core technologies for achieving high reliability and maintenance-free operation in modern medium-voltage switchgear.
