What is the difference between disconnectors, load switch and grounding switch?

Disconnectors, load switches, and grounding switches are three types of switchgear with distinct functions in power systems and are often used in combination.

Simply put, the core differences between the three are:

Disconnectors: Provide a clear disconnect point to ensure safe maintenance. They cannot be operated under load.

Load switches: Can disconnect or connect normal load currents but cannot interrupt fault currents.

Grounding switches: Reliably ground the line, preventing accidental power flow and protecting personnel.

What is the function of the grounding knife?

 

I.Disconnectors


Main Functions:

Isolating Power: During equipment maintenance, a visible, reliable air-insulated gap (disconnection point) is created, completely isolating the equipment under maintenance from live parts to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.

Switching Operation: Under specific operating conditions, circuits are switched (for example, from one busbar to another).

Small Current Switching: It can switch circuits with only voltage and no load, or very low currents (such as the excitation current of a transformer or voltage transformer).

Key Features:

No Arc Extinguishing Device: Since it is not designed to interrupt current, it has no arc extinguishing capability or very weak arc extinguishing capability.

Never operate under load: This is the most important operating principle! If the switch is switched on under load, the resulting strong arc can burn equipment, cause a phase short circuit, and lead to a serious accident.

Usually used in conjunction with a circuit breaker: The operating sequence is strictly regulated: When power is on, close the disconnector first, then the circuit breaker; when power is off, open the circuit breaker first, then the disconnector.

Appearance: When disconnected, a clear air gap is visible.

 

Ⅱ. Load Switch


Main Function:

Normal load current switching: Safely connects and disconnects the normal operating current of a circuit (i.e., load current, such as that of motors and lighting circuits).

Has a certain degree of short-circuit withstand capability: Able to withstand short-circuit currents for a short period of time, but cannot interrupt the current itself.

Key Features:

Equipped with a simple arc-extinguishing device: It possesses a certain arc-extinguishing capability, enabling it to safely extinguish arcs generated when switching load currents.

It cannot interrupt short-circuit currents: This is its most fundamental difference from a circuit breaker. When a short circuit occurs in a line, a series fuse or a higher-level circuit breaker must be used to interrupt the fault current.

It is often used in combination with a fuse: this combination is called a "load switch-fuse combination device." The fuse interrupts short-circuit currents, while the load switch switches normal currents.

Application Scenarios: Commonly used as a main switch in low-capacity distribution lines (such as 10kV systems), it is less expensive than a circuit breaker.

 

Ⅲ. Grounding Knife Switch


Main Functions:

Reliable Grounding: Reliably grounds the line or equipment side of the equipment during power outages for maintenance.

Residual Charge Discharge: Discharges any residual charge on the powered-off equipment to the ground.

Prevents Accidental Power Supply: As a critical safety barrier, if someone accidentally closes the switch, short-circuit current will flow directly into the ground, causing the upstream protective device (circuit breaker) to quickly trip, thus ensuring the safety of maintenance personnel.

Key Features:

No Arc Extinguishment: Never close the switch while it is live! The grounding knife switch should only be closed after confirming that the equipment is completely de-energized (first disconnect the circuit breaker, then the disconnector).

Mechanical or electrical interlock with the disconnector: This is a mandatory safety measure. The grounding knife switch can only be closed when the disconnector is fully open, and vice versa. This prevents the accidental accident of closing the grounding wire while it is live.

Appearance: It looks like a "knife" and is directly connected to the grounding bar after closing.
